Ohio hunter FAQ
Last reviewed . Next review (UTC). This is a quick summary, not the full rules. Check with the state wildlife agency before you hunt, move, or donate a deer.
When is deer season in Ohio?+
2026–27 statewide: archery Sept. 26, 2026–Feb. 7, 2027; youth gun Nov. 21–22; gun Nov. 30–Dec. 6 and Dec. 19–20; muzzleloader Jan. 2–5, 2027. In the Disease Surveillance Area (DSA), archery opens Sept. 12 and early gun runs Oct. 10–12, 2026. Check ODNR for permits, county limits and complete rules.
What should I know about CWD in Ohio?+
The 2026–27 DSA includes all of Allen, Hardin, Marion and Wyandot counties plus designated townships in Crawford, Delaware, Hancock, Morrow and Union counties. Check ODNR's boundary map before hunting. All deer harvested in the DSA on Oct. 10–11 or Nov. 30–Dec. 1, 2026 require CWD sampling by noon the next day. Testing is otherwise voluntary. Deer baiting is prohibited in the DSA. Whole carcasses and high-risk parts cannot leave unless they meet carcass rules or go to a certified processor or taxidermist within 24 hours. Check ODNR's current transport rules and certified list before moving a deer.
Can I donate venison in Ohio?+
Donate through a participating FHFH processor. Call ahead to confirm participation, available funding and drop-off rules. Processing is covered while program funds are available. Follow tagging and game-check rules; donated deer count toward your bag limit. ODNR requires CWD testing for deer harvested in the DSA before donation. Ask the processor about testing before delivery.
